Now you can enjoy delicious meals based on fish caught with gentle fishing methods. Rahbek now gives you the opportunity to choose fish meals with the MSC eco-label, which is also recommended by WWF Verdens-naturfonden (Danish division of World Wide Fund for Nature). The MSC eco-label is your guarantee that the fish is caught in accordance with sustainable fishing methods. MSC-labelled fish are caught in accordance with very strict rules to secure both the sea environment and the fish stock. All of which makes our dishes that little bit more tasty!

What is MSC?
MSC stands for Marine Stewardship Council. MSC is an independent organisation that works to preserve the natural sea environment and to secure the fish stocks. MSC has its own label, and fish producers are only allowed to use this label on fish products that live up to strict rules regarding environmental and sustainable fishery. MSC was established in 1997 by Unilever and WWF, but is today an independent organisation – and the only global certifying arrangement within fishery. MSC products are increasingly available in the retail trade in e.g. the USA, Germany and Great Britain. In Denmark, however, Rahbek is among the very first to launch MSC fish meals in the retail trade.

The three principles of the MSC-label
It is not easy to be certified to use the MSC label. The landings should be in agreement with the three MSC-principles for fishery:

Principle 1: The condition of the fish stocks
This examines if there are enough fish to ensure that the fishery is sustainable.

Principle 2: The impact of the fishery on the marine environment
This examines the effect that fishing has on the immediate marine environment including other non-target fish species, marine mammals and seabirds.

Principle 3: The fishery management systems
This principle evaluates the rules and procedures that are in place, as well as how they are implemented, to maintain a sustainable fishery and to ensure that the impact on the marine environment is minimised. (Source: www.msc.org)

Why does Rahbek support the MSC eco-label?
Rahbek has always focused on quality and good raw materials – our principles apply from the fish is caught until it lands on your dinner table. We therefore find it obvious to support the spreading of the MSC eco-label in Denmark. We would like to MSC-label all our fish products right away, but this is simply not possible. Only a limited number of fish species can be MSC labelled. The new MSC-labelled fish meals from Rahbek are based on Wild Salmon and Alaska Pollock.  With the increased focus on sustainability within fishery, we hope that it will be possible to offer more MSC labelled fish products soon.
